Sachin’s Weblog

Me and Linux

Almost two years back from now, when i had started my carrier at Tekriti, I was not sure where all my tiny academic knowledge will lead me to and today when i’m punching my experience to this web world, i’ve already begone to visualize where my fate wanted me to go. It still, is a long way and i have just started.

I met Gaurav, Ashish and Manish. Around ‘2 n 1/2′ years back they started “Tekriti”-{Tech + Kriti (Creation in Hindi)}, leaving a very interesting and inspiring story behind for all of us. Working with them has always motivated me to a greater extent, their presence around is motivational enough for me above all their support and faith.

My first experience with Linux has came as Fedora Core 3’s customized version by Cyber Media’s PCQ linux 2003. At the very beginning i was asked to upgrade Apache, php and MySQL installed on a staging server for tekriti’s various Projects. Some how i compiled updated versions, brought the system up with some minor problems but that was a very horrible experience, they have C-panel installed on the server, which then needed some configuration tweaking before it could be fully functional again and after then no looking back.

My first Server Setup was GoingOn, for a very high profile client from silicon valley, Tony Perkin’s AlwaysOn needed a development platform, with drupal and Tekriti it comes out as a GoingOn, tekriti was referred to Tony Perkins by Marc Canter, i suppose. After 1 n1/2 years from then, GoingOn will be soon coming out of it’s beta version with very huge range of users and high recognization. Parallel to GoingOn, Marc’s Peopleaggregator was in its development phase, although i havn’t touched the servers for Peopleaggregator but the support that i have provided to it’s developers soon shown me the power of open source platform. GoingOn and Peopleaggregator, both are the two social networking platform built on different base with a slight difference to their theme as well. GoingOn basically is based on web publishing need of entrepreneurs to communicate their experience to others, wherein Peopleaggregator concentrates on vast range of users for the same.

‘Tekriti’ soon was known as expertized in Social networking platform, with the kind of projects we were building everything starts falling for us. A lot of short terms as well as long terms projects were released during a very short period of time, but the projects that caught my attention during the time were CoolMarks for ActionTech, Cubii and Glued.in.

Goingon, was my learning and coolmarks was the implementation of what i have learned. One thing i’ve came to know during those days that for every system administrator security should be the battle to concur first, even a single ‘easily missed loop-hole’ can bring down your whole efforts. My experience with SSL certificates for CoolMarks and it’s DNS, although was not new, but was good enough. I have tried Sendmail and Dovecot for Coolmarks, and added another area under my domain of expertise. Everything went smooth for “CoolMarks”, another picture sharing platform like flickr with added features of Document and Desktop sharing. It certainly was a very good experience working with professionals of Action Tech.

Glued.in, ’self load balanced’ servers are on Amazon’s vitrual server’s network, i don’t know who’s idea was this but it always encourages me to create the same kindda setup of virtual server of my own, anyways glued.in was the first released home product by Tekriti, based on the spirit of media sharing platform, like youtube. what’s make it special then youtube is, you can create your own youtube and embed it with your web site with very little piece of coding. They have integrated it with GoingOn’s video sharing for free for first few months.

Well, lemme finish it here with a confidential note that we are now working for another high profile client of ours ‘Indiatimes‘, and have finished yet another project my.indiatimes.com in remarkable time. And you know what, it’s 15th of Aug 60th anniversary of india’s independence, My Indiatimes was launched on 14th at 4 PM after removing port 80 restrictions by me, (wish i could cut the ribbon as well) :) wish you all a very happy independence day !
